  • This is what Getting 8 Hours Sleep does for Muscle Growth

‘Sleep is for the weak’ you might have been told when out partying or when your militant boss wants you to do an 18-hour shift. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Getting enough sleep will actually make you stronger – not just mentally, but physically too. They say you should try and get at least eight hours a night – and there’s a very good reason. Sleep is when your body and brain repair and recharge. But this is especially true if you’re doing any punishing kind of training or you’re trying to build muscle. You can take all the supplements, eat all the protein and lift all the weights you want, but our muscles repair and grow when we rest – and there’s no better rest than sleep. We know sleep deprivation can make you gain weight, increase your stress hormone cortisol levels and even mess with your appetite-suppressing hormone leptin.

But sleep is key to muscle growth as well as general physical well-being, so understanding exactly what happens when you go to bed is important. The Sleep Matters Club have pulled together some science about what happens with an athletes body in terms of muscle growth when they sleep. There are four stages of the sleep cycle, which fluctuates between non-REM and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep every 90 minutes. Stage 1 is when you first doze off and you are easily woken. Brain wave patterns in this stage are associated with muscle memory and ‘logging’ movements learned during the day. Then Stage 2 of the sleep cycle is when you descend into a light sleep and your brain activity slows down. The body relaxes in preparation for a deep sleep and Prime Boosts Official starts to produce Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which increases the growth of muscle tissue and regulates the body’s metabolism. Following this comes the deepest and more restorative part of the sleep cycle in Stage 3. Blood supply to the muscles increases, more HGH is released and most growth and repair occurs in this period. The growth hormone flooding the body helps the muscles recover and re-energise as well as supporting improved immune function and metabolism. An anti-inflammatory hormone called prolactin is also released which are important for joint recover. Stage 4 is the REM phase when brain activity fires up again when you’re most likely to experience dreaming. It’s during this phase that your muscles are supplied with extra oxygen to breakdown lactic acid. If you’re not getting enough shut-eye, you get painful and potentially-problematic muscle knots called “trigger points” building up.

Why Did I Gain Weight After Working Out? There are several research-backed reasons why you might notice a slight weight gain after exercise. These include muscle gain, water retention, post-workout inflammation, supplement use, or even undigested food. In most cases, post-workout weight gain is temporary. Here is what you need to know about gaining weight after working out. Why Did I Gain Weight After Working Out? Gaining weight after working out is likely due to muscle fiber inflammation, muscle glycogen and water weight gain, and over time, muscle mass gain. If weight loss is your goal, seeing an increase on the scale when you’ve been making an effort to exercise can be frustrating. However, it is often a normal, common occurrence that is likely temporary. Here are some of the reasons why it might be happening to you. You will likely gain muscle when you start working out. How much muscle you gain depends on your diet and the type of workouts you do.

But any increase in physical activity is likely to produce at least some improvements in strength and muscle mass. If you participate in strength training workouts and consume adequate protein, you’re likely to see more significant increases in muscle mass. Genetics also play a role in the amount of muscle mass you gain when starting an exercise program. If you tend to gain muscle easily, consider yourself lucky. Muscles help to shape a strong, healthy body. Some people put on muscle more quickly than others. But when you gain muscle, the number on the scale is likely to increase. In fact, even if you’re also losing fat, you may see an increase on the scale. Muscle is more dense than fat, but it takes up less space. That means if you gain muscle, your scale weight may go up even as you’re losing body fat. If you’ve been working out regularly, it’s possible for you to lose inches even if you’re not losing weight.

A higher number on the scale could mean that you are losing fat while gaining muscle-a positive trend that leads to a leaner, stronger body. Water retention is a common cause of temporary weight gain. Pre-menopausal people are especially prone to body-weight fluctuations throughout the month due to hormonal changes. If you have periods, you may notice some degree of bloating immediately before and during your period. Exercise can help reduce pre-menstrual symptoms, so it’s helpful to keep up with your workouts, though you may still see an increase on the scale. Studies have shown that fluid retention peaks on the first day of menstrual flow. It is lowest during the mid-follicular period (the middle phase of your cycle) and gradually increases over the 11 days surrounding ovulation. The degree to which you see an increase on the scale varies from person to person, but at least a slight increase in weight-even after exercise-is normal.

  • What to Know about the Endomorph Diet

People with an endomorph body type tend to have a slow metabolism, making it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it. An endomorph diet and exercise plan can help with meeting and maintaining health goals. People with an endomorph body type usually have soft, round bodies with a wide waist and large bones, joints, and hips, regardless of their height. This article covers what an endomorph body type and diet is. We also discuss exercises that may help people with endomorphic bodies lose weight and build muscle. What is the endomorph body type? In the 1940s, psychologist William Sheldon described three main body types, or somatotypes: ectomorphic, mesomorphic, and endomorphic. People with an endomorphic body may have characteristics and traits that make it difficult for them to diet, gain muscle mass, and exercise. They also tend to have a slower metabolism, possibly due to their more substantial build.

Having a slower metabolism can mean that the body is more likely to convert excess calories into fat. According to Sheldon, following diet and Prime Boosts exercise plans may be more challenging for endomorph body types. For example, they may have a general desire for food, comfort, and relaxation and be more prone to sedentarism. Therefore, people with endomorphic bodies may need to more carefully control what they eat, when they eat, and how much they eat. What is the endomorph diet? Sources differ on what the best endomorph diet plan is. Generally, people with endomorphic bodies may benefit from a paleo-like diet where each meal contains protein, vegetables, and some healthy fats. The paleo diet, also known as the Stone Age diet, is an eating plan that mimics how prehistoric humans may have eaten. According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), people with an endomorph body type tend to be more sensitive to carbohydrates and insulin.

Insulin is a hormone that allows blood sugars to enter cells. So, people following an endomorph diet may wish to limit or avoid carbohydrate-dense foods, especially refined carbohydrates such as white flour and sugar. These foods release sugars rapidly into the bloodstream, causing blood sugar spikes and dips. The body is also more likely to turn these sugars into fat than burn them as energy. Due to their slow metabolism, endomorphic bodies are also more likely to convert excess calories into fat. For this same reason, people following an endomorph diet may want to avoid foods that are generally calorie dense but nutrient poor. Exercise is an important part of any weight loss plan, especially for Prime Boosts people with an endomorph body type. Exercising helps increase metabolism and reduce fat. The ACE recommends that people with an endomorph body type follow “well-rounded” exercise routines that focus on both cardiovascular and strength training activities.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT): In HIIT, a person will alternate between periods of very high intensity exercise and low intensity exercise or rest. Those with endomorphic bodies can try doing HIIT sessions two or three times per week for a maximum of 30 minutes per session. Steady-state training (SST): These are longer sessions of consistent moderate to low intensity exercise. Good SST exercises include walking, jogging, and swimming. People with an endomorph body type can try doing 30-60-minute SST sessions two to three times per week. Strength and weight training exercises are an important part of almost any weight loss plan, especially for people with an endomorph body type. These people often have a low percentage of muscle mass, although they have large, wide bones typically capable of bearing large, strong muscles. They also tend to have excess body fat, which triggers the body to release estrogen, reducing testosterone levels and hindering muscle growth.

  • How Long does Muscle Growth Take?

Most people work out to lose weight and get fit, while others focus on muscle gain. In this article, I’ll explain how long it takes to build muscle through strength training. On top of that, I’ll also discuss the different factors that change that answer. How Do Muscles Grow? Whenever you exert yourself sufficiently during a workout, your muscles experience some degree of trauma or damage. This triggers nearby cells, known as satellite cells, to signal to your brain that your muscles need resources in order to heal. Your body then sends amino acids, oxygen, and other nutrients to the damaged muscle, so it can rebuild blood capillaries, restore muscle fibers, and strengthen itself. In other words, every time you damage your muscles by overexerting them during training, your body gives those muscles the resources they need to grow bigger and stronger in hopes that they won’t get damaged next time. ’ll have to balance these three factors.

What’s The Best Way To Build Muscle? When it comes to building muscle, there are many factors that come into play. Some people have a natural ability to gain muscle faster than others, and some people have to work really hard, for a bit longer, to see real results. Even if you have “bad genetics”, all hope is not lost. You must only worry about the other factors you CAN control to pack on the muscle you want and find the answer to how long it takes to gain muscle for you. I try not to. Some have to work more than others to get results, but everybody has to work hard to earn the results they want regardless. So, focus on what you CAN control. The three things you can control are diet, exercise, and rest. Diet is important because your diet helps to control the nutrients your body has to work with on the processes of healing and Prime Boosts Official maintaining muscles.

For good muscle growth, you’ll need to consume a sufficient amount of calories and protein. You’ll also need the right amount of vitamins and minerals. See, if you’re not giving your body enough of these things, it can slow the whole process down and make it more difficult to see the muscle growth you’re looking for – even if you’re training consistently. Without the right nutrients, your body will have a tougher time healing or maintaining/building new muscle. Actually, there are a variety of health and fitness supplements that can help you get the nutrition you need, from protein shakes to daily nutrient packs. Exercise is also important, you can’t just prioritize your nutrition on its own, and then magically grow a whole bunch of muscle. Strength training, specifically resistance training with weights or bands, or body-weight exercises, can be a great way to build muscle (and strength). See, if you’re not exercising, then your body won’t need to rest and recover.

If it doesn’t need to recover, it won’t try to make your muscles bigger or stronger. However, it’s important to understand that just overworking your body each and every workout or training session, and going to “failure” every set is not as effective either. See, there’s a difference between the trauma caused by healthy exercise and the trauma caused by an injury. And when it comes to injuries, they can really set you back. Finally, there’s the need for rest. Rest is essential, because you need to give your body, specifically your muscles, time to heal. This is especially true with strength training. If you don’t give your muscles enough time to recover, you’re just working out already-damaged muscle tissue. This can cause the muscle tissue to become further damaged as well as hurt your form and slow your progress. At times, the hardest part for athletes and fitness enthusiasts is to have enough self-control and Prime Boosts Official discipline to NOT workout and allow their body to properly recover …

  • Nutrition for Building Muscle: Q0 Tips + Bonus Recipe!

Strength training is beneficial for Prime Boosts Pills many reasons. It relieves stress, improves heart health, and strengthens bones and joints to protect against injury – among other things! But let’s be honest, many of us hope to gain a strong and sculpted physique from strength training, too. From an aesthetic perspective, muscle is what gives your body a “toned” look and shape. However, increased muscle mass is good for you in ways that extend far beyond appearances. Insulin is a hormone that is secreted by the body in response to food. It acts to shuttle glucose (aka blood sugar) from the blood and into cells. Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s response to insulin is impaired, resulting in a rise in blood sugar, and subsequently high insulin levels. Insulin resistance is associated with various conditions including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and PCOS. Research suggests that muscle improves insulin response (known as insulin sensitivity). For example, a large-scale study of over thirteen thousand participants found that for every 10% increase in skeletal muscle mass, there was an 11% decrease in insulin resistance. The effect might be even more pronounced in people with diabetes. Osteoporosis, or thinning and weakening of the bones, is a serious public health issue especially as we age.

In the US alone, an estimated 10.2 million people aged 50 and over have osteoporosis and about 43.3 million more people have low bone mass. Osteoporosis can lead to life-threatening fractures that leave many people immobile. Peak bone mass is achieved in your early thirties, and declines after age 40. This highlights how important it is to prioritize bone health in early adulthood. Luckily, researchers have found that increasing skeletal mass builds up greater bone strength and density. Ever wonder why some critically ill patients are encouraged to do physical activity? With a doctor’s approval, Prime Boosts Pills performing physical activity to preserve muscle is a key aspect of recovery. It aids the body’s immune system response and provides nutrients to parts of the body when needs are higher. One review looked at the role of muscle in combating inflammation. The researchers found that preservation of muscle was a key determinant of survival and ability to recover. Since building muscle is nearly impossible when your health is already compromised, it’s beneficial to bolster your body composition before you get to that point.

Nutrition plays a foundational role in muscle building, influencing everything from energy levels during workouts to muscle repair and growth afterward. Understanding how specific nutrients support muscle hypertrophy can help you optimize your diet for better results. The most important macronutrients for effective strength training are protein and carbohydrates, but healthy fats are important too! Micronutrients such as vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and zinc also have a role to play when it comes to muscle function and growth. Protein is vital for muscle repair and growth. In addition to energy and satiety, protein provides the amino acids necessary for repairing and building muscle tissues. The process of muscle protein synthesis (MPS), where new proteins are produced to repair muscle damage caused by exercise, is crucial for muscle growth. The branch-chain amino acid leucine also stimulates muscle protein synthesis. Leucine can be found in foods like chicken, beef, eggs, and dairy products. Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy for most workouts.

  • Why do some People Gain Weight after Starting a Workout Program?

You start a new exercise program with dreams of changing your body. When you step on the scale a week later, you see results – but the numbers aren’t exactly moving in the direction you wanted. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services. That’s right … after all that hard work, your new workout routine led to you GAINING weight. How in the world is that possible? As it turns out, a slight weight increase is typical as you begin a new fitness journey. To explain why you might add a few pounds (at least temporarily), we turn to physical therapist Gary Calabrese, DPT. Your body goes through changes as you begin an exercise routine. It’s part of a natural physiological process as you begin putting more demands on your muscles, says Dr. Calabrese. Here’s how that new workout can bring added pounds.

Exercise puts stress on your body that can lead to small micro tears (also known as micro-trauma) in your muscles. In response to the damage, your body activates its internal repair system to trigger inflammation. “Basically, your body retains fluid around the micro tear to try to heal it,” explains Dr. Calabrese. Water has weight, of course, which is why this healing mechanism can add pounds after a challenging workout. The good news? The inflammation (and Prime Boosts Supplement extra weight) typically disappears within a day or so, according to Dr. Calabrese. Plus, your “repaired” muscles come back stronger to help you make fitness gains. If you’re working out more, you’re going to need extra energy – and those power reserves can show on the scale at first. When you start to exercise more regularly, your body keeps reserves of glucose (in the form of glycogen) in your muscles to answer the call the next time you work out. Glycogen binds with water as part of the process, which can add 1 to 3 pounds of initial water weight gain.

The effect, however, is short-lived and should end in a few weeks to a month. Exercising can make you REALLY hungry. But while it’s important to refuel after a workout, it’s also possible to overdo it when you hit the kitchen to grab a bite, cautions Dr. Calabrese. A few minutes of munching can easily lead to you consuming more calories than you just burned. The solution? Put as much thought and Prime Boosts Supplement effort into your post-workout snack as you put into your exercise session. Focus on eating proteins and nutritious foods that will fill you up and leave you less likely to grab a less-than-healthy option later. As you exercise and build muscle, don’t be surprised to see a trimmer you in the mirror but a larger number on the scale. The reason? Muscle is denser (meaning a lot less fluffy) than fat, says Dr. Calabrese. Put another way, 10 pounds of muscle takes up a lot less space than 10 pounds of fat.

So, as you start working out regularly and building strength, the new muscle you build may eventually weigh more than the fat you’ve burnt off. Learn more about muscle weight vs. It often takes at least a month or two to add enough muscle to tip the scale, so don’t be surprised if it happens. Know this, too: Muscle burns more calories for you, which will pay off in a leaner and more fit body in the long run. When you start a workout program, don’t fixate on your scale to determine the effectiveness of the new exercise for you. That’s often NOT the best measure of whether you’re making healthy changes. Talk to your healthcare provider, physical therapist or athletic trainer if you have questions about changes to your body, too. They can help you map out your progress. “The key point here is that weight and muscle mass changes will occur,” states Dr. Calabrese. “You may gain a little weight at first, which isn’t what some people see as headed in a positive direction.

What Is Body Fat Percentage? What Is a Good Body Fat Percentage for a Male? What Are the Risks of High Body Fat? What Are the Risks of Low Body Fat? What Is a Realistic Body Fat Percentage? You’ve almost certainly heard the term ‘body fat percentage’ before, whether in conversation in the gym changing room, marketing fodder for fitness transformations, or even in a Men’s Health article. With a little bit of know how, the measure can act not just as a motivator on your fitness journey, but better yet, a dependable marker of health. But that begs the question, what is a healthy body fat percentage? When starting on a fitness journey, the odds of you actually sticking to it has been shown to be only 33 per cent,’ explains Josh Silverman, head of education at Third Space London. Unlike BMI, this measurement takes into account your lean mass as well as total weight.

  • Eccentric Contractions use less Metabolic Energy

Eccentric training is a type of strength training that involves using the target muscles to control weight as it moves in a downward motion. This type of training can help build muscle, improve athletic performance, and reduce the risk of injury. An eccentric contraction is the motion of an active muscle while it is lengthening under load. Eccentric training is repetitively doing eccentric muscle contractions. For example, in a biceps curl the action of lowering the dumbbell back down from the lift is the eccentric phase of that exercise – as long as the dumbbell is lowered slowly rather than letting it drop (i.e., the biceps are in a state of contraction to control the rate of descent of the dumbbell). An eccentric contraction is one of the distinct phases in the movement of muscles and tendons; they include isometric contraction (no movement), isotonic contraction, Prime Boosts Pills and concentric contraction (shortening). Eccentric training focuses on slowing down the process of muscle elongation to challenge the muscles, which can lead to stronger muscles, faster muscle repair and increasing metabolic rate.

Eccentric movement provides a braking mechanism for muscle and tendon groups that are experiencing concentric movement to protect joints from damage as the contraction is released. Eccentric training is particularly good for casual and high-performance athletes or the elderly and patients looking to rehabilitate certain muscles and tendons. This movement has also been described as negative training. This “negative” movement is necessary to reverse the muscle from its initial trajectory. When the load exceeds the force that can be developed by the muscle at a constant length, as in an eccentric muscle action, the exercise is referred to as involving negative work, because the muscle is absorbing energy. Eccentric contractions use less metabolic energy, even though they can create more force than concentric actions. Adolf Eugen Fick discovered in 1882 that “contracting muscle under stretch could produce greater force than a shortening muscle contraction” like in concentric movements. Fifty years later, A.V. Hill found that “the body had lower energy demand during an eccentric muscle contraction than during a concentric muscle action”.

Erling Asmussen introduced eccentric training in 1953, with “ex” meaning “away from” and “centric” meaning “center”. Hence, the term was coined to mean a muscle contraction that moves away from the center of the muscle. The first revelation of the functional significance of these properties occurred in a clever demonstration devised by Bud Abbott, Brenda Bigland, and Murdoch Ritchie. They connected two stationary cycle ergometers back-to-back with a single chain, such that one cyclist pedaled forward and the other resisted this forward motion by braking the backward-moving pedals. Because the internal resistance of the device was low, the same force was being applied by both individuals, yet the task was much easier for the individual braking. This demonstration cleverly revealed that a tiny female resisting the movement of the pedals could easily exert more force than, and hence control the power output of, a large burly male pedaling forward. During the eccentric phase of the movement, the muscle absorbs energy.

This work is done “by stretching the muscle and in this process, the muscle absorbs mechanical energy”. This mechanical energy is dissipated or converted into one or a combination of two energies. The energy that is absorbed by the muscle can be converted into elastic recoil energy, and can be recovered and reused by the body. This creates more efficiency because the body is able to use the energy for the next movement, Prime Boosts Pills decreasing the initial impact or shock of the movement. For example, kinetic energy is absorbed in running every time one’s foot strikes the ground and continues as one’s mass overtakes the foot. At this moment, elastic recoil energy is at its maximum and a large amount of this energy is absorbed and is added to the next stride. This movement is similar to the action of springs, where the muscle is continually shortened and stretched resulting in enhanced effectiveness and force. It can lead to the perception of “less effort” even though dealing with higher force.
